What have you got in your home? I have nothing against a good commentary but I would prefer people made it clear to everyone that the Bible is the word of God and a commentary is some guys take on it. We need Gods word not mans. The words of the LORD are pure words: as silver tried in a furnace of earth, purified seven times. Psalm 12:6. Let me ask you this, is this true of the words of man? We need to wake up right now and put a stop to the practice of changing Gods word to mans.
I struggled with Matthew 19:17 at first. What if my first impression had been printed and labeled a Bible. People would think Jesus said “I’m not good, only God is good.” That is not what Jesus said. He said, “Why callest thou me good? there is none good but one, that is, God:”. Yes, that sounds like He is saying He isn’t God, but when you realize that He is talking to people who don’t believe He is God it makes perfect sense. If they don’t believe He is God they shouldn’t call Him good.
These dynamic equivalency http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Formal_equivalence and paraphrase versions are stealing Gods word from the hands of Christians around the world and we are heading straight for the prophecy of Amos 8:11-12, Behold, the days come, saith the Lord GOD, that I will send a famine in the land, not a famine of bread, nor a thirst for water, but of hearing the words of the LORD: And they shall wander from sea to sea, and from the north even to the east, they shall run to and fro to seek the word of the LORD, and shall not find it.
But he answered and said, It is written, Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of God. Matthew 4:4 That does NOT give us license to do a thought for thought instead of a word for word translation.
Check out what this guys got to say about the proper way to Bible study. “For your main reading and study, use a dynamic equivalent translation (strikes a balance between literal and paraphrase). The most widely used Bible today is the New International Version (NIV), which is a good choice. Select a type with good explanations, either a Student Bible or a Study Bible. Then augment it with a free translation (paraphrase) style such as the New Living Translation (NLT) or "The Promise" (CEV).” http://www.swapmeetdave.com/Bible/BibleType.htm If he doesn’t think we need every word of God I would take the rest of what He’s got to say with a grain of salt.
I’m tired of hearing people say, “I can’t understand it.” Stop wining and figure it out. It’s important. It’s Gods word. He will help you understand what He needs you to understand. If you can’t trust Him for that you need to work on your faith. Also the longer you are submerged in a language the easier it is to understand, it’s shear laziness to change Gods word because it’s too much work to read it as He gave it. You know what, not understanding every word immediately keeps you from a superficial read. When you have to look up answers God knows you are serious.
I’m also tired of hearing, “but the unsaved won’t understand it.” Yup, but making it readable to a four year old isn’t going to change that. The bible says they are spiritually discerned. He is an all powerful, almighty God and if they truly have a heart for the knowledge of Him, if they are truly seeking, He will open their eyes to His word, no matter how old the English is.
In Acts 8 when the Ethiopian was attempting to read the word of God and told Philip he couldn’t understand it, did Philip run to the other apostles and say, “Hey, this guy says he doesn’t get it. We need to change the word of God.”??? No! He guided the man. The Holy Spirit Himself sent Philip to him.
We need to stop thinking we know better than God does about how to reach people. What seems right to us can always really be satans tactic to snare souls. That is why we must stay grounded in Gods EVERY word.
And no marvel; for Satan himself is transformed into an angel of light. 2 Corinthians 11:14
